The Importance of Nail Preparation
Nail preparation is crucial for any enhancement treatment, whether it be Shellac, gel, or acrylic. Without proper prep, issues like nail lifts, breakage, or product detachment can occur. The natural nail surface is covered with oils produced by our body and external substances from creams or soaps. These need to be removed to create a clean, oil-free surface for nail products to adhere to. Proper nail preparation ensures durability and prevents potential health risks like nail mold or rotting.
Step 1: Cuticle Preparation
The first step in nail preparation is cleaning the cuticle area. A dry or combination manicure is recommended over a wet one, as water can soften the nail plate, affecting product application. Use gentle drill bits to lift cuticles and buff the nail plate, eliminating oils. After this, cutting the cuticles ensures a clean base for nail enhancement.
Step 2: Nail Plate Buffing and Shaping
Once the cuticles are prepared, the nail plate must be buffed and shaped gently. Use a 180-240 grit file to shape the nail, removing the free edge for better adhesion in extensions, or shaping for overlays. A soft buffer can be used for surface smoothing, making sure not to over-file.
Step 3: Removing Dust
Thorough dust removal is a critical step before product application. Dust can cause bubbles or lifts, affecting durability. Use a stiff brush to clean the nail plate and underneath, followed by a cleanser on a cotton pad to wipe away any remaining dust. Ensure all cleanser has evaporated before moving to the next step.
Step 4: Priming the Nail
Choosing the right primer is vital for attachment. Three main types are dehydrator, acid primer, and acid-free primer. Dehydrators remove traces of oil, while acid primers provide deep preparation for difficult cases of non-adhesion. Acid-free primers create a sticky layer for better product bonding. Allow each primer to evaporate before proceeding.
Step 5: Base Application
A proper base application is essential in treatments requiring it. Avoid contact with cuticles to prevent lifts. Massage the base onto the nail with a brush for better longevity, and cure thoroughly without removing the sticky layer before adding other products. This ensures a solid foundation for further nail art or enhancements.
Aftercare Advice
Provide clients with aftercare tips to maintain nail enhancements. Advise using cuticle oil twice daily and keeping the nails moisturized to prevent dryness and potential lifting. Recommend avoiding prolonged water exposure and harsh soaps, encouraging the use of gloves when necessary to protect the enhancements.
