Remembering Lord Charles O’Hagan: A Close Connection to Royalty

Lord Charles Towneley Strachey O’Hagan, a notable figure due to his deep ties with the British Royal Family, passed away at the age of 79. He was known for being one of the godsons of the late Queen Elizabeth II, highlighting his esteemed place within royal circles.

Early Life and Royal Connection

Lord O’Hagan’s story with the Royal Family began in his childhood when Queen Elizabeth II, still a princess at the time, chose him as a godson. Their relationship blossomed over the years, and his role became more pronounced when he served as her Page of Honour from 1959 to 1962, soon after Elizabeth’s coronation as Queen of England in 1953.

Academic and Political Pursuits

An alumnus of New College, Oxford, Lord O’Hagan graduated in 1961. He pursued a master’s degree, reflecting his strong academic credentials. Venturing beyond academia, O’Hagan embarked on a political career, serving as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for Devon. His tenure as MEP spanned two notable periods, first from 1973 to 1975 and then from 1979 to 1994, showcasing his dedication to public service.

Personal Life and Family

Throughout his life, Lord O’Hagan experienced marriage thrice. His first marriage was to Princess Tamar Bagration-Imeretinsky of Georgia in 1967, which bore a daughter, Nino Natalia O’Hagan Strachey, in 1968. Following their separation in 1984, he married Mary Claire Roose-Francis in 1985. After a decade-long marriage that ended in 1995, O’Hagan wed Elizabeth Lesley Eve Smith in the same year, remaining together until his passing.

Tragic Death and Cause

Lord O’Hagan’s death resulted from a severe head injury, specifically a subdural hematoma, a condition frequently caused by head trauma. The precise circumstances leading to his injury remain undisclosed. He died at North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple, England, leaving behind a legacy intertwined with the narratives of royalty and public service.

The End of an Era

Lord Charles O’Hagan’s passing marks the end of an era for those who were intricately connected to the Queen during her lifetime. His life reflects a journey from royal circles to distinguished public service, underscoring the profound impact he had on those who knew him, both within the Royal Family and beyond.

As the world reflects on his legacy, Lord O’Hagan remains a testament to a life lived with grace, duty, and an enduring connection to Britain’s royal lineage.
